The Control Enthusiast’s Guide to Delegating

April 21st, 2009 by Lauren · 2 Comments

They say to write what you know, so I’ve made another contribution to my “HR for the Self-Employed” series (part of the larger Biz Ladies series) over at design*sponge on the subject of delegating.

I suck at delegating. But I’m trying hard to learn how to do it well! And I’m a firm believer that it is critically important for entrepreneurs to learn this skill — perhaps especially those of us in creative professions. So, here are a few of the lessons I’ve learned that make it fun and easy (or at least, more fun and easier) to ask for help: The Control Enthusiast’s Guide to Delegating.

(By the way, “control enthusiast” is Joss Whedon’s phrase. He says he doesn’t like the term “control freak,” but he’s happy with “control enthusiast.” I dig that.)

P.S. I’ve just noticed that Grace also posted Part Three in my series: “That Magic Moment: When to Make Your First Hire” (inspired by a comment posted here… so if you have burning HR-related questions — even if you’re your only employee — please leave them in the comments!).

by the way, I love that you “rebranded” it as a control enthusiast. I’ll be sure to tell my husband I’m just a “control enthusiast” next time he assigns me one of his other labels. ;) Loves it.

being a control-freak, it’s really hard to let go and let others have some part of the work, i wish i could learn to do it better!
